All new parents face many new challenges, and one of them is the very first vacation with a little baby. Thousands of questions pop up in your head: what to pack, where to go, and how to prepare for unplanned surprises? Stay calm. We have gathered the most important information to ensure that your first vacation together runs smoothly and completely stress-free.

Choosing the Place and Accommodation

When planning your first vacation, especially with a small child, it is worth paying attention to a few key details. First of all, you need to be sure that the hotel or resort you choose is genuinely family-friendly. Nowadays, more and more hotels and holiday centers offer special amenities for families with toddlers. These are properties where you will find water parks, playgrounds, kids’ menus, and plenty of other activities. When choosing your destination, you should also consider the location—make sure the place is quiet and away from the noise, but at the same time close to the beach or attractions that can keep the little ones interested.

What to Pack?

When packing for a holiday with a child, you have to think about what to bring (because unfortunately, they won’t tell you themselves yet). Consider their favorite stuffed animal, a familiar pillow, or another toy that will make the journey and the stay more comfortable. You can also pack the books you regularly read to your toddler. Hygiene products are absolute essentials in your luggage. This includes items like diapers, wet wipes, protective creams, and a basic medical kit for sudden fevers or minor bumps. If you know you will be spending time on the beach, sun protection is critical—high UV filter creams, a sun hat, and a light beach umbrella or a small pop-up tent are your absolute must-haves.

Organizing the Journey

Traveling with a child is quite a challenge, especially if it involves long hours spent in a car, a train, or a plane. If you have the flexibility, it is smart to adjust your departure time to your child’s nap schedule, so they can sleep through a large part of the trip. If your child is a bit older, make sure to keep a water bottle and some healthy snacks that they like within arm’s reach. On a plane, bringing along compact toys can be incredibly helpful to keep your child’s attention occupied for a longer period.

Planning the Holiday Daily Schedule

When heading out on a vacation with a child, it pays to plan your daily schedule in advance to minimize stress on the ground. In the morning, right after breakfast when it is not too hot yet, dedicate your time to walks or outdoor play. When the afternoon temperatures get too high, plan a break for some rest in the shade or back in the hotel room. Late afternoons can then be spent enjoying activities like the pool or the playground. The important thing is to adapt the itinerary to the child, and not the other way around.

Staying Ready for Surprises

And finally, the unpredictable moments! Remember that when traveling with a child, you need to be ready for anything. Children, especially the very young ones, can react differently to a change of environment or climate. They might have a bad day or suddenly feel under the weather, which means that instead of hitting the beach, you might have to spend a day in the hotel room. It is much better to be mentally prepared for these situations beforehand. But through all of this, dear parents, do not forget about yourselves—because relaxed and well-rested parents mean a happy child.
